A Dream Deferred

Written By Gary Spirer Published October 9th, 2009

What happens to a dream deferred?
Does it dry up
like a raisin in the sun?
Or fester like a sore –
And then run?
Does it stink like rotten meat?
Or crust and sugar over –
like a syrupy sweet?
Maybe it just sags
like a heavy load.
Or does it explode?

Do you live your life based upon some dream of retirement? Or, do you have some dream that starts with “if only.” Or, do you pace your home or office wondering what happened to the years that flew by?

Do you recoil at the thoughts of years past when the world was so full of possibilities? And now, you can only look back at all the energy – the twists and turns, the strategies and the plotting.

To what end, you may ask?

Are these but dreams deferred?

Are you going to let your dream die like a raisin in the sun? Will you allow it to rot within you until it’s memories fester and stink?

Do not let the dream die. In some shape or fashion, the dream is alive. Just the thought of it should envigorate.

You see, there is something courageous about dreaming the dream right now.

Take small steps and defeat the deferred dream shadow that becomes a pall over your life.

Instead, let your dream, however tired and worn, trudge into the sunlight. Bask in your dream. Relish it!

Let it explode into a brilliant reality.
