How is your website faring? Track your visitors with Google Analytics!

Written By Gary Spirer Published March 26th, 2010

Google Analytics is one of many great ways to track who visits your site and obtain detailed information about your visitors. The detailed information provided by Google Analytics will help you determine how your site is faring; what is attracting your web-surfers; and how you can improve your site.

So, how can you include Google Analytics to your site? We’ll show you how to sign-up for Google Analytics and use the program for your site.

Instructions:

Step 1.
*Sign up for Google Analytics.*
Go to www.google.com/analytics and click on the “sign up now” link. Google Analytics is entirely free. Your Google Analytics accounts can also be used for other Google services such as Gmail and Google AdSense.

Step 2.
*Fill in the information needed for a Google Analytics account.*
Fill in the information required to get a Google Analytics account; and click “Finish” at the end.

Step 3.
*Add the tracking code to your Webpages/Website. *
Follow the directions on placing the tracking code to your website/webpages. It’s basically to place the code between the and section of your webpages. However, remember to post the tracking code to every webpage on your site. This is to ensure that all of your webpages will be “tracked.” Then, you can determine whether one webpage is bringing in all your traffic; what topic is popular, etc.

Step 4.
*Upload your Webpages to your server*
By uploading your webpages, Google Analytics can now start to track the traffic on your website/webpages. You should be able to get detailed information about your traffic within 24 hours.

Step 5.
*Check to see your Website’s tracking code is working*
Log in to Google.com/analytics and check the “status” under the “Website Profiles” list under “Analytic Settings.” The status should indicate “Receiving Data.” If it says “Tracking Data not Installed,” then it is possible that you didn’t insert the tracking code correctly; or no one has “hit” the page yet.

Step 6.
*Study your traffic reports.*
Check out the graphs, maps and the various reports you can access on Google Analytics. Become familiar with the various reports and study the traffic data. There are so many various reports on Google Analytics that we can’t go into detail about all of the reports here. If you want to learn about all of the detailed reports, I would suggest you buying the book.

Overall, Google Analytics will give you a clearer picture of who is viewing your website; and what is attracting them to your site. With all of the reports available on Google Analytics, you will be able to analyze your site’s performance and improve it to bring more traffic to your site.

So, what are you waiting for? Get yourself a Google Analytics account and reap in the benefits of all the free reports!
