Stesp to Networking – Step 80: MINING THE INTERNET

“National borders aren’t even speed bumps on the information superhighway.” TIM MAY, ONTOLOGIST

According to estimates, over 300 million people use or have access to the Internet. As a result, the Internet has become a networker’s paradise because it enables networkers to link up with a virtually unlimited array of potential networking partners across the globe.

In the past, when you wanted to network, you were restricted to regional or industry-specific efforts. Usually, you had to network in your own community and try to build from there. A certain, select few were able to attend state or national trade shows, conferences or conventions and could network within their own industry. However, most of these events were costly and they took place only a few times each year. Building close relationships with contacts in other states or countries was difficult and expensive so most networkers stayed close to home.

Now, it is all changed because the Internet recognizes few boundaries. In fact, the Internet erases most boundaries.

• Web site and Internet communities now blanket the world. When you visit a site or take part in an Internet community, you don’t know whether it emanates from across the hall or across the ocean. You may end up chatting with people who live abroad or down the street. You can communicate with, learn from and do business with practitioners who have vast experience in a field you may have just entered.

• The Internet’s global reach dramatically increases your networking possibilities. By simply joining an Internet community, you can be surrounded by scores of like-minded people who are eager to discuss subjects that interest you and share their information, resources and insights .

• As a networking tool, the Internet is an exceptional value because you don’t have to pay steep admission fees or the expenses that mount up when you attend networking groups and events. When you network via the Internet, you don’t have to shave, comb your hair or even get out of your PJs. You can sit at home, safe and snug and network with multiple, faceless partners in cyberspace.
