Convert Energy into Results

Sometimes in a meeting, or perhaps a more private discussion, a truly intriguing idea will be advanced. Your ears perk up. The room is electrified. You can almost cut the “Wow factor” with a knife. That doesn’t necessarily mean that the idea will pan out, but you can and should use this motivational “peak moment” to your advantage.

WHAT IT MEANS: Plain and simple: make the excitement work for you. With the momentum of enthusiasm on your side, it’s like running downhill. You will surely cover more ground in less time—so don’t wait for the glow to fade. Turn the inspiration into action by getting everyone involved in specific tasks that can either explore the feasibility of the idea or actually make it happen.

ACTION PLAN: Decide then and there what needs to be done to put the idea into play. Have an impromptu strategy session to develop the project framework—things to be done, who will do them, and when. Make it clear that you’re excited by this Big Idea too, by your willingness to fast-track and support it.

EVEN BETTER: Realize that any idea, no matter how brilliant on paper—especially those ideas that upset the status quo—is almost bound to be met with a certain amount of resistance. Part of your responsibility is to garner a groundswell of internal support—in other words, to sell it. Consider effective ways to do this as part of your overall plan. Who will you need to talk to? What will you need to say?
