The business side of being a blogger: steps to drawing revenue from your blog

Written By Steps To Faculty Published May 22nd, 2010

In another article, we discussed what you need to do in order to point yourself in the right direction as a writer. Now, we are going to delve into what it takes to make your blog into a money-making venture. If you know the right steps, you don’t have to content yourself with just writing for ‘exposure;’ you can write for a comfortable living, too.

Step 1 know your readers

If you want to sell people things using your blog, if you want them to purchase items affiliated with your blog, then you need know who your readers are and what they want. The best way to do this is, and the most transparent, honest, way to do this, is to have an interactive site where people fill out information about themselves. Light-hearted questionnaires or questionnaires that ask a person about his or her likes or dislikes or that request basic demographic information can be a useful way of getting a sense of what type of readers you are dealing with and what things interest them most. Armed with information of this nature, you can then take the next step of putting up ad-links and Google Adsense ads that bring these people into contact with products that suit their interests. Of course, you can go even further than that and actually offer such products on your blog site via a commerce manager or some such other order-handling process.

Step 2 make your website interactive

In the first step, we talked about knowing your readers – and about the importance of having some sort questionnaire available where people can fill out information about themselves. But you do not have to stop there: you can have feedback forms right on your site so that your readers can prod you to produce specific articles or columns that they are interested in seeing. At the same time, you can even introduce live chat or utilize twitter or some other form of social networking to draw people in and to keep them interested in what you have to say.

Step 3 Multiple streams of income from a blog are a must

Last of all, there is the matter of establishing differing streams of income from a blog. Steve Pavlina writes that you can generate revenue from a website using Google Adsense ads; via donations; via Text Link Ads; using Chitika eMiniMalls ads; through affiliate programs with firms such as LinkShare or Amazon; and, last of all, you can sell advertising to individual advertisers (Pavlina, 2006). Of course, you can also create your own subscribers’ lists whereby you give audience members additional reading materials and perks for a fee.

In the end, there is no reason why you cannot make money while still doing something you genuinely love to do; all you have to do is follow the steps outlined above.
