Mobile technology for the charitable organization: how to give while on the go

Written By Steps To Faculty Published July 26th, 2010

Most people do not associate mobile technology with charities – but they are wrong to do so. What follows below are a few simple steps that people should follow when making a text-based donation. If you keep these steps in mind, one thing you will immediately notice is that you will become a much more efficient donor to the organizations that mean the most to you and that could perhaps use your dollars the most. Follow these steps and the process becomes a very simple one.

Step 1 Keep the donation amounts small

When you decide to make a text-based donation, it is always wise to keep the donation amount small: people can be quite reckless or negligent when rushing to and fro and a bit of meta-cognitive thinking is never a bad thing.

Step 2 Make sure you target the right organization

Organizations that want your money usually have a short code (5 or 6 digits) that allows you to initiate the entire giving process online. When you know the code, send a message that features the keywords “AID,” “GIVE” or even the organization’s acronym. Always make sure that you have the right code in hand when you initiate that donation so that you do not run into the problem of sending the wrong money to the wrong organization. A little bit of repetition or rehearsal before you dial is never a bad thing.

Step 3 Always wait for the confirmation of donation

It sounds silly in some ways: you have already made your donation, yet now you are expected to wait on the confirmation? But the little secret people overlook when making mobile donations is that those brief confirmations are vital for the simple reason that they can keep you out of trouble: if you have inputted the wrong donation total, this is the perfect chance to correct things before you give away too much money – and far more than you wanted to give away.

At the end of it all, donating via mobile technology is fast and easy – and it can be a lot of fun, too. However, mobile technology has its problems – problems which mostly arise from the fact that the technology allows for carelessness for inappropriate sums of money to exchange hands. Whenever you use this new technology to give money to your favorite organization, always bear in mind that keeping the amounts in question small – and making sure to wait for the confirmation so that you can do a once-over before taking the final plunge – is immensely important; so many people forget that those small prompts on a small screen are there for a reason – and they are dealt some unpleasant surprises as a result.
