Stay Vigilant In The Face Of The Highly Improbable

Written By Gary Spirer Published July 25th, 2011

The best laid plans of mice and men oft go awry.

Wwere it not for the great worldwide events, the chance variable, the outlier, life would be far different.

In his book “Outlier”, Malcolm Gladwell write about these extreme variables in life. As well, the same topic of outliers is written about in “The Black Swan: The Impact of The Highly Improbable”, by Nassim Taleb. Forces beyond our control such as hurricanes, tsunamis and earthquakes – create confusions and chaos in our lives.

Chronic and debilitating diseases can attack us, and bring much suffering. And, oftentimes, human avariciousness, deception, and hunger for power causes mass suffering.

But, there is a light that shines through all this chaos and misfortune. There are favorable outliers that become things like Facebook, Microsoft, scientific discoveries, random acts of courage.

The need to remain vigilant is spoken to in the Psalms of the Bible. You will not be able to control the random variables – such is the human condition.

But, what you can be as vigilant as possible about those things that are in your control, and make a commitment to live your life to the fullest no matter what life throws at you. Here’s how:

Step 1: Have integrity
Step 2. Help to improve the human condition
Step 3. Aim for a greater consciousness
Step 4. Seek good health for you and those you love
Step 5. Help those that are not as fortunate by expending your time, money and resources
Step 6. Be alert to natural disasters in your area and try to prepare as much as you can for them
Step 7. Never let your guard down – especially with those nearest and dearest to you. Remain trusting, but remember your and others human frailty.

Be vigilant.
